Here is an excellent example of an academic letter of reference written by a professor for a student. The student was admitted to the engineering program at MIT.

Sample Academic Letter of Recommendation

Warm Compliments!

I am excited to write this letter of support for a talented young girl Ms. John Doe. Before I go on to do that, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Dr. ABC, Associate Professor and Head of the department at the Institute of XXY. I have been associated with the field of academia for over two decades. Throughout my extensive tenure, I have come across many students from all backgrounds. My experience in knowing a well-rounded student is only enhanced after meeting so many students. I know the benchmark I am looking at against the students I come across. This is one of the most challenging duties, as everyone has unique qualities. When I think of Ms. John, I am delighted to mention that she sets the bar high. She is one of the most exemplary students that one fondly recalls, even though she graduated more than five years ago.

In my professional encounter with Ms. John Doe, I taught her three of the most critical courses in Environmental Engineering: Energy Resources & Management, Air/Noise Pollution Control, and Solid Waste Management. Furthermore, I have also been her Undergraduate Mentor and Coordinator for two years, which enabled me to know her humble personality. This quality is lacking in today’s youth, and one can only have it if one comes from a well-grounded family. Students like Ms. Doe do not take education for granted and make sure they burn the midnight oil to reach the pinnacle of success they are destined for.

Ms. Doe has shown keen interest in my subjects, which her top-of-the-class grades can further verify. As energy is her area of interest, Ms. Doe was able to devise new ways of using the software RetScreen for energy modeling. She approached me for technical guidance in her final year project on Salinity Gradient Solar Pond, which further revealed her expertise and genuine knowledge in the energy field. Doe was able to assertively discuss and understand core engineering subjects like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer related to her final year project. She wanted to ensure she gained the most in the classroom so her practical world transition was smooth.

As a UG- Coordinator, I also observed Doe’s involvement in various extra-curricular activities. She was a valuable part of the Sports Society. Her leadership skills have enabled her to become an organizer for various university events like the “Trash to Model” Environmental Club. Her commendable communication skills have always stood her out. She has been a public speaker for the largest events like ABC Farewell, International Workshop on Desalination and Sustainable Energy, and ABC Sports Society Closing Ceremony.

I would deem her worthy of pursuing a graduate degree since I have observed her as a passionate protégé, willing to build an impact on society. Wishing her all the best in her future endeavors for now and always.
