Recommendation Letter for Scholarship (Academic)

Here is an excellent example of an academic letter of recommendation for scholarship written by a professor who also happens to be the head of the department. The applicant was admitted to University of Chicago on scholarship.

Hope the following account I write of Ms. Jon Doe justifies my assessment of her and she can impress the Scholarship committee at U Chicago, the same way I have been impressed in my encounter(s) with her.

I am Professor Dr. James Clad, Head of the Department of the Institute of Environmental Sciences & Engineering, NUS. I have had the pleasure of knowing Ms. Doe over the past four years, who quickly gained my attention through her curious questions and inevitable zest to learn. Under my supervision and tenure, an internship was offered to her for a renewable energy project, namely Salinity Gradient Solar Pond, funded by WaterAid, a U.K based non-government organization worth $10 Million USD. Ms. Doe continued working on this as her final year project under my supervision. She devised numerous innovative ideas, like making the diffuser herself and creating a gradient by carrying out respective calculations.

Furthermore, her fervor to make electricity from the internal heat exchanger, which unfortunately could not be accomplished due to lack of funds, was commendable. She also published her findings in a report titled, “Designing and Construction of Pilot Scale Salinity Gradient Solar Pond and Gradient Establishment Along with The Heat Extractions.” Ms. Doe’s work convinced the Assessment Committee of the final year project to collaboratively give her an “A,” which is given to only top 2 projects of our every graduating class.

I have also taught Ms. Doe two subjects: Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment. While I monitored her, she showed a genuine interest in water and wastewater treatment. This is highly applaudable as students find this subject a bit dry. However, Ms. Doe thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, Ms. Doe successfully worked on a class project in GPS- X software that involved water modeling and its treatment. In this thesis report, she showed leadership as she went ahead and explored numerous water quality parameters based on the treatment systems, according to which she made a comprehensive study regarding the Hydraulic Retention Time and Sludge Retention Time.

In summing up, Ms. Doe is among those very few people who can justify receiving a full scholarship to pursue higher studies as she can be beneficial for herself and our country, as she is determined to move forward on steady footing.

For any details regarding her, feel free to contact me.

Thank you once again and I hope that you give her this scholarship opportunity.
