Should you buy Greg Mat Subscription? Detailed Review

GREG MAT is a GRE prep service that offers online classes, 1 on 1 tutoring, and other interactive learning solutions. The first thing to notice about GREG MAT is the…

A lot of GRE aspirants think: What is the real name of GREG MAT? Is it Greg (First name) Mat (Last name)? Or is it just a concatenation of the two test names, GRE & GMAT? In my view, that’s not his real name. For branding purposes, he just coined the two test names to form his prep company. Regardless, GREG MAT is simply a fantastic resource to use for your GRE prep.

GREG MAT is a GRE prep service that offers online classes, one on one tutoring, and other interactive learning solutions. The first thing to notice about GREG MAT is the extremely affordable nature of the service. Big fish in the prep industry charge anywhere from $50 to $1000+, whereas GREG MAT has a monthly subscription system where you pay $5 and get access to a variety of learning material.

$5 is insanely cheap!

As a student, you don’t have the budget to make use of expensive prep services. Moreover, taking and retaking the GRE itself is not cheap. Hence, it is a breath of fresh air when someone offers a credible prep service at such a minuscule rate.

Aside from the affordability, you will notice a personal touch when using GREG MAT. The founder of the website assumes an active role on the website. You can also reach him easily to discuss problems, and he often uploads free videos on YouTube as well.

Whenever I want to learn something, my first question is how credible a particular tutor or service is. Are they personally involved in what they are teaching? Do they have a history? Do they understand the nuances?

So when it came to GREG MAT, I was relieved to learn that the founder has taken the GRE multiple times, and his best score, the one he has posted on the website, is awe-inspiring, i.e., 169 Quant, 170 Verbal, and 6.0 Analytical.

How does GREG MAT work?

GREG MAT offers online interactive GRE prep classes. The way it works is you pay $5 a month to become a member. Once you become a member, you can log in to your account and head over to the members’ area.

The members’ area has four major sections.

  • Classes
  • Study Plans
  • Practice
  • Tools

In the first section, you can register for live classes, access previously recorded classes, visit the calendar, and listen to podcast episodes.

There are a total of 3 live classes per week, and you can choose which class you want to attend from a list of 8-10. To participate in a live class, you will have to register for it beforehand.

Each class is around 1 to 2 hours long and vary in topic.

Moreover, there is a specific class called “Have a beer with Greg,” where you can directly ask all your GRE questions. This class is 2 hours long.

Furthermore, there are around 400+ recorded classes listed in the “recorded classes” tab. Every live class that has ever been streamed are all stored in this repository. This is an enormous resource for anyone looking to prepare for the GRE.

If you want to learn even more, you can also listen to the podcast episodes, which revolve around GRE’s various topics. You can easily listen to these while on the go.

The second section, Study Plans, basically lays out a study plan for the GRE. If you need guidance on how to manage your time, then this will be extremely helpful. The study plan is very detailed; it breaks the whole process down into days. It will tell you what you should study and for how long.

The third section, Practice, lets you access a variety of different practice tests and questions. The one thing that stood out to me is how Greg Mat only uses ETS’s official GRE practice tests. This means that you get to practice on actual GRE questions and not third-party questions that can never match ETS’s standard.

The last section, Tools, contains a GRE calculator that resembles the actual GRE on-screen calculator to familiarize yourself with it.

Moreover, you can view a random GRE essay at a click of a button and even submit your essay for evaluation in the “write an essay” tab. There is also a “random word generator” that will display a random GRE word.

Greg Mat is highly interactive

As opposed to prerecorded classes, GregMat offers live classes where students can ask questions directly. The tutor is capable of teaching the GRE topics and encourages participation. You get three live classes per week and access hundreds of previously recorded classes, a bargain for only $5 per month.

Greg Mat is super affordable

The affordability of GregMat is one of its high points. You will rarely find a course that is so well structured and so credible for such a low price in the world of test prep. A monthly payment of $5 gives you access to a magnitude of different learning material. You can also cancel anytime you want.

Exceptional verbal tools

GregMat’s approach to vocabulary learning is unlike anything I have ever seen. You get access to “Greg Mat’s list,” which features some of the most common GRE words that appear on actual tests. There is also a “word of the day” option that displays a new word each day that you can learn.

However, none of these is as exciting as the “GRE Movie Dictionary.” This tab consists of hundreds of GRE words divided into 12 groups. When you click on a group, it displays the corresponding words. Click on a word, and it plays a movie clip containing that word. How cool is that! Talk about context.

Authentic GRE questions

Since GregMat uses only the official ETS GRE questions, you get the most authentic experience when you solve these questions. Third-party practice tests try to replicate GRE’s problems, but they always fall short. This is because GRE has a very systemic approach to the nuances and the context that goes into a particular question.

Friendly and intuitive interface

Browsing around the website is extremely easy. The interface contains big and colorful illustrations for each section. There is no clutter and unneeded icons to throw you off. You will also find the overall tone of the website to be amiable. It almost seems as if you are getting taught by a friend. I appreciate the warm and welcome sort of approach of the website and the instructor.

Practice Tests Cost Extra

Unlike other test prep companies, GregMat does not have its own full-length GRE practice tests. If you want to use full-length practice tests, you will have to buy these separately from ETS.

This may not be much considering how GregMat itself is so cheap.

Bottom Line

GregMat is an incredible GRE resource on the internet. From the website’s layout to the content itself, I find everything to be of high quality. I especially like the no-nonsense attitude of the founder to GRE preparation. Sure, it lacks the marketing and advertisement of a big company, but unlike those companies, GregMat doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg. More importantly, you get to interact with a GRE tutor three times a week. They have an extensive library of prerecorded classes as well that covers every aspect of the GRE. If you need to learn from the ground up with next to no understanding of GRE concepts and are on a budget, I don’t see why you wouldn’t want to buy a membership.
