“We wish you had a son who would care for you in your old age.” I was eight years old when I heard my grandparents utter these words to my parents. I was too young to grasp the enormity of those words and their implications for me, the eldest of three sisters. However, I was soon introduced to the harsh reality of being a girl in Saudi Arabia. My extended family hounded my parents with advice on how to raise their daughters, insisting that we were a financial burden that could only be relieved when we were married off. My worth was outlined to me in a few simple commands. Be quiet, be subservient and be submissive. However, this did not curb my thirst for knowledge and empowerment. I wanted to prove that I mattered as a girl, daughter, and human being!

During college, I found my purpose. There was a bake sale at my college, and I was assigned to set up a stall selling flavored betel leaves. Despite being an indigenous product, it did not fit the gender stereotype for women. This problem motivated me to devise and execute a marketing campaign for our stall. Our phenomenal success decided my fate. The sheer pride and delight I felt that day became a beacon of hope for the otherwise unremarkable future I had envisioned.

I gained a full scholarship to study business at King Saud University, a renowned institute I otherwise could not have afforded. This scholarship was a blessing for me, and it made me realize that despite being a girl, who had several restrictions put on her, success could be for my taking. My degree helped me evolve and surface as a confident individual and enabled me to establish myself as an emerging professional. Staying true to my goals, I got on the dean’s list, stood first in my entire batch, and achieved a gold medal, along with an Honors: Magna Cum Laude.

Despite many academic achievements, my learning was not restricted to the confines of my classroom. I volunteered at several events to explore and understand my passion for business. My escapades highlighted my path for me. Even after graduating, I have interned with several organizations to gain hands-on learning experiences, such as Nestle, Coca-Cola, and Barclays Bank. In parallel, I also performed Teaching Assistant duties at college.

My resolve is to do marketing work that will enhance people’s lives by stressing the positive picture of the state and nurturing this disposition to benefit the nation. I have pursued this goal throughout my academic career and worked hard to refine my research, communication, and marketing skills. After completing my undergraduate research, I wrote a paper based on my business research project. I presented it at the Singapore Biz-Strategy Conference and published it in the GSTF Journal on Business Review (GBR).

The program I have opted for is ideal for the skills and training I wish to obtain. The MS Communications program will help me refine my analytical abilities. This specialized degree will augment my communication and marketing skills and prove instrumental in acquiring innovative strategies employed in the developed world. This degree is a vital prospect through which I can enhance my career and impact the marketing communications niche in my home country. My experience and skills demonstrate my desire to realize my goals. Through graduate education, I will be better equipped to continue my pursuit of breaking down gender stereotypes in the marketing industry, in which males have predominated.
