In fact, networking is such a central component in the working world that it’s in almost every business deal. You might be doing it already, but you don’t even know. First, let’s talk a little about what networking is. To put it simply, networking is creating meaningful relationships with people that would help your business succeed and benefit those you’re in a relationship with. It’s a two-way street. As your business succeeds and grows, its reputation, services, or products receive a better reputation, which attracts a bigger clientele. As a result, your business continues to grow, and so does your audience or network.

What makes networking so valuable?

Think about before the printing press came out. How did people hear about businesses and the services they provide? Usually, it was via word-of-mouth, right? People talk, and what they say can have a significant effect on your business. It just happens to be that people have much larger platforms to talk on these days.  

Networking is so valuable because it utilises the relationship with people to reach other people in order to better your business or career. Remember, it’s not always about what you know, but sometimes about who you know. As people, we’re built for relationships with one another. But building healthy business relationships can take time and tact. Let’s set the floor before we dive in. We often describe networking as building bridges. The stronger the bridge, the more weight it can handle. The bridge represents how strong the relationship is, and the weight is the possibility of potential work-related benefits. With that in mind, let’s check out the steps to network like a pro:

Know who you want to network with

This might fall into knowing your target audience, but you need to strategise who you network with. This means identifying the other businesses or individuals you want to be in the same circle with and how you can benefit from them and be a benefit to them. Remember, networking needs to be mutually beneficial. Which leads us to our next point.

Offer something in return

If you refer back to that quote by Earl Graves above, networking often involves a win-win situation for both parties involved. So don’t go empty-handed into discussions without having something of value to offer. We want to build a strong bridge, and what better to do it than strong connections? Consider offering them a sample of your product or a free service. This would show them your intent is sincere and serious and is a great foundation for a strong bridge.

Just be yourself

Integrity is highly respected in the business world. You don’t want potential partners to see you conducting yourself differently among different people. This will set a bad tone about your character and show them that you weren’t genuine in your dealings with them. Rather, be authentic from the get-go. This will help you build trust with them.

Use their names next time you meet

Remembering and using someone’s name shows them that you took an interest in them and cared enough to remember them. This is a skill that goes further than just the business world, it’s key to building strong, lasting relationships. So, try your best to remember details about those you want to network with like their names.

Practice with your mates first

The notion of networking sounds so official that we forget to look at the opportunities written in front of us sometimes. Start by networking with your friends. Discuss work ideas with them and the possibilities of collaboration. Even if this doesn’t work out, it’ll still give you experience with how to network.

Got onto social media

Since the pandemic in 2020, social media marketing has boomed and many businesses have flocked to online platforms to find employees and collaborators. We’d suggest adopting inbound and outbound marketing strategies for clients and as you build up your portfolio you’ll find that other clients will start messaging you.

Check your options

A diverse network opens up more opportunities. Don’t limit yourself to just one type of contact; connect with potential customers, collaborators, employees, and business partners. The wider your network, the more chances you have to grow your business and discover new opportunities.

Never put all of your eggs in one basket. Diversifying your network will offer you a much better field of potential business to help you achieve success. So, we’d suggest connecting with people in various fields of work to offer you a larger range of people to grow your business.

Attend events

Attending events is the perfect place to meet people in a similar and different industry to you. We’d suggest that you make an effort to go to business events solely for the reason of networking.

Get a mate to introduce you

When you’re at an event and see a good opportunity to connect with someone, ask a friend who knows that person to introduce you. Having a person they know introduce you will make them feel more comfortable and could even lead to them trusting you more due to the relationship. So, if possible, always have a friend introduce you.

This point is essential! Always get contact details. It’s the worst feeling when you’ve connected well with a person and have a wonderful idea for a business partnership and when you try to contact them you realise that you actually can’t.
